Young players put in big performances

4/09/2008 10:48:00 AM
Nyngan Junior Soccer celebrated the final week of competition for 2008 with a double banger - the zone gala day at Gilgandra on Saturday and the club presentation on Sunday.

All five teams participated in the Gilgandra gala day, playing against teams from Gilgandra, Warren, Trangie, Tottenham and Cobar.

Both Nyngan minis teams put in their best performances of 2008, with the Bull Ants even winning a match -their first win for the season.

This little team coached by Ron Collins has blossomed in recent weeks and was out to prove a point at the gala day.

They had a shaky start when key player Will Boag announced he felt sick but he soldiered on and did a proficient job in the goal for the first game against Trangie.

By lunchtime the Bull Ants were revved, and put in a “blinder” against Warren to win 1-0.

There was some superb work by Paige Cobcroft, Melanie Bodycott, Ryan Hibbins and Angus Holmes.

Great goal work was made by Kyle Hall and Cale Dunn. After many attempts Joel Waterhouse was the only goal scorer in this game.

The fighting spirit dwindled slightly by the afternoon, by which time Will Boag was again feeling sick. Cale Dunn had headed for another commitment in Dubbo and Ryan Hibbins was also crook.

The slack was taken up by Jade Wye, Abbey Carter, Ryan Collins and Hamish Carter but the final score was a loss.

The other minis team - the Dragons - coached by Jenny and Mark Griffiths were kept scoreless and win-less, but again the improvement in form was dramatic.

There was a good number players present on the day which allowed plenty of substitutions. Lachie Donnelly, Jorja Griffiths, Ella Meldrum and Alex McLaughlin were solid in attack and Archie Ray, Max Hoare, Lily Meldrum, and Kathryn Richardson were great in defence.

William Gudgeon made a welcome return to the pitch and showed some gutsy moves. Hamish Donnelly was dependable all day, Austin Patterson showed his developing skills and Jessica Yelverton was on form.

In the mids, team one had a win, draw and a loss. Bill Gillespie was the goal scorer on the day with a very neat little chip in from the edge of the circle.

Hamish Wye was plucky in attack as was Jack McLaughlin, and Jordan Rufus showed some great footwork. James Carter worked well with his sister Grace, showing the benefit of their many backyard practice sessions, while Elly Smith and Claire Carter were confident in their tackles.

The mids team two played a great final weekend as well. Coach Emily Glason has given this team a real understanding of the tactics of soccer and they will benefit for years to come.

Brian Bonello’s senior team also played well and capped off a great season of soccer which saw them dominate the competition.

All players who participated in the gala day were awarded a medal.
