Tigers cling to semi hopes

23/07/2008 4:49:00 PM
First Grade: The Nyngan Tigers kept their semi-final spot in sight with their second win in two weeks by beating Narromine 30 points to 4 at Larkin oval. Despite losing inspirational captain coach Brad Besant for the season with a broken hand and losing big centre Damien Smith and front rower Rob Hooker to injury prior to the game, the Tigers played a good team game to come away with a convincing win.

Narromine provided strong opposition while Nyngan never appeared in any danger all day, but Narromine is a side that niggles and really puts the pressure on officials and opposition alike. So it was a credit that the boys could turn the other cheek and not fall into the trap Narromine was trying to set.

The forwards laid the platform for the win with big Mitch Cobcroft leading from the front with good support from Todd and Brad taking the ball up all day. Snow Robb got through a power of defence and had support from Dusty Hurst and Jake Homer off the bench.

When the backs got the ball the Tigers took some handling, Mixie Lui strong on his return from injury. They had good support from Dekka Knight and Luke Matheson while out wide James Neyland, Danial Riley, Hayden Watt and Clint Hedges went well with limited opportunities.

All in all a good effort from the Tigers. Scorers for Nyngan were tries Daniel Riley, Hayden Watt and James Neyland one each and big Mitch Cobcroft got a double. In the goal- kicking department Daniel Riley had a great day kicking five out of five.

Reserve Grade:

The Tigers suffered only their second loss for the season. It could prove to be a blessing in disguise as maybe things were going too well for the boys and they needed to get a wake-up call.

The Jets are in the top three and while the Tigers tried hard, errors at crucial times proved costly. The Tigers really lacked intensity and seemed to go through the motions, expecting to win without putting in the effort.

Veteran Bruce Quarmby again led from the front with strong assistance from Jake Homer and James Taylor with Kurt Whaley and Al Deebank strong off the bench. The backs never got going all day but Tony Kilmartin and Charlie McHughes tried hard all game.

Scorers for Nyngan were one try each to Josh Bourke, Al Cochrane, Darren Toomey and James Taylor with halfback Les Hooper kicking four goals from as many attempts.

Under-18s:

The Tigers scored their first win of the season with a gutsy 26-24 win over the Narromine Jets. The boys did it the hard way and had to score two tries in the last couple of minutes, scoring the last try as the full-time bell went to grab a two point win.

This is great reward for a young side that doesn’t get the opportunity to train together and a credit to them and coach Mitch Cobcroft for really sticking to their guns and getting just rewards for their efforts.

The Tigers were strong up front with both front rowers getting tries Luke Bartley one and a double to Aiden Fryer with Dylan Franklin and Zac Mitchell scoring the others. Hooker Ryan Hall managed to kick three conversions in very trying conditions.

Well done fellas and keep up the good work with only a couple of games to go.
