Juniors play well against Cronulla

24/04/2008 9:41:42 AM
Nineteen members of the CRL Far West Academy rugby league squad travelled to Cronulla over the weekend to play against the Cronulla under-15s Junior Development side.

The game took place on Friday morning at Endeavour 2 adjacent to the newly redeveloped Toyota Park.

The Far West boys tried hard and for the first half of the match were competing with the strongly favoured Cronulla side.

However, the fitness of the Cronulla side saw them race away to a 38-0 win over the CRL Far West side by full-time.

The side was led well around the park by halves Luke Ritchie and Jacob Neill of Nyngan. Good performances were given by Jordan Hay and Zach Douglas up front.

Head coach Col Wright took positives from the match even if the final score indicated otherwise.

“The boys tried really hard and gave it their all but the Cronulla side were more drilled and their fitness really helped them in these conditions,” the coach said.

“Our boys rarely play in these conditions and it showed with some handling errors but they will learn from this and become better footballers.

“A game against a top NRL Junior Development side also shows the boys what standard they have to be if they are serious about becoming a first grade player, and I’m sure we will have a lot of kids going back and working on their game to make sure they get to this level.

The squad ventured out to Parramatta Stadium on Friday night to see home side Parramatta Eels take on the Manly Sea Eagles. In a tight contest the squad saw Manly get away with a win 20 - 16.

The FWAS would like to thank the Ken Fitzgerald for the work he did in the lead up to our visit to ensure it was a great trip and also to Kevin Wise, Parramatta, who organised the tickets for the Friday night game.
