Zone match tough for Pennants play

28/05/2008 5:16:00 PM
A small crowd was treated to a spectacular game of bowls when Nyngan took on Coonabarabran in the Zone number three pennants on Saturday.

After 63 ends only four shots separated the two sides, with Coona taking a split points decision. Nyngan won two rinks to one, but failed to snatch the big board points.

The team of Jake Waterhouse, Bill Barrow, Jamie Lee and Adam Lee scored a one shot win over the team skipped by John Franklin.

The locals always appeared to have control of the game, and if behind were only behind by a shot on two ends.

At the 16th end they were looking pretty with the score at 18-11, but the loss of three twos put Coona behind by a shot again, and the last two ends were split to make the score 19-18.

The team of Darrell Anderson, Rick Jermyn, Conrad Conway, and Mick Parry took on the side skipped by Terry Wark.

The locals took out the first end, but soon found themselves trailing 7-2 after five ends.

The lead was extinguished the following end with the locals picking up a five, and then put another five shots on the board in the following three ends to lead 12-7 after nine ends.

Coona again gained the ascendancy to trail 13-12 on the fourteenth end. But Mick’s mob scored a six, a four and a two, to also be looking pretty at 25-12 with four to play.

The locals then lost twelve shots in the final four ends to win 25-24.

The final team of Dick Cobcroft, Les Bexon, Barry Beetson and John Chalker appeared to be on a hiding to nothing in their match against Barry Wilkinson’s side.

After three ends the locals trailed 10-0 thanks to some superb bowling by Barry Wilkinson, aided by the locals having one bowl in the head each time, and after ten ends the score was 21-1.

The locals hit back, to their credit, scoring a five, three, two, four and a two in consecutive ends to trail 20-21 with five ends to trail. The wobbles that seemed to effect the other rinks also effected this rink, losing a two, a single and a four to have them again trailing 28-20.

They scored a single, leaving them seven behind, but five behind on the big board. Chalker had a chance to level it up with the last bowl of the game, needing to trail the jack a metre to score the required five.

The first attempt sprayed narrow and the second long in a below par effort at this grade.

A good hitout for the locals to ensure there will be no complacency for the rest of the season.

A glaring statistic coming from the game was the fact the locals in the last fifteen lost 26-5.

This week the boys travel to Bourke, who beat Coonabarabran on Sunday 5-1.

The circus continued after that match with Nippo and Ron Sullivan taking on Mouse and Richard Riley in a game of handicap pairs.

Nippo and Sulli took a three shot handicap bonus into the game, but that was wiped on the first end. This sparked the boys into action, and after ten ends the scores were level at eight apiece.

Ron and Nippo hit the jackpot with a four and a five in consecutive ends, but Richard and Mouse hit back scoring five shots in three ends to cut the difference to four shots on the fifteenth end.

Sulli and Nippo tightened their grip on the game, winning the next three ends to lead by nine with three ends to play, and held on to win the game 25-15.

A great night was held for the 300 club on Saturday night, but I must have a virus as I have no memory of who won it.

There are still a handful of people that pledged to buy a ticket and we would be greatful if you could drop into the club to pay it, or alternatively give it to who you pledged the money too.

This Saturday sees the return of Texas Hold ’em Poker, with this week being a money game.

Friday night is as always the Thirsty Friday bowls, with the Joker sneaking up to a hefty amount, and a good assortment of prizes in the raffle.

The renovations are under way, and should be finished within the fortnight.
