The final for the championship pairs was played on Wednesday morning starting at 11am. Members of the match committee arrived at the club to see the last few ends and were given an entertaining and exciting finish to the game. On the last end the duo of Stanley and Chalker were holding four shots with the game at 14-18, only to have Melissa come down and draw shot and the match 19-14. It’s a shame that more of us didn’t know that the game was on as it proved to be a nail-biter to the finish. Congratulations to all four ladies for a brilliant game, it was a shame that there could only be one winner. That gives the second championship to the Arandale name. First round of the triples to be played by August 13 as per the request of the match committee.
It’s with sadness that we acknowledge the passing of bowling member Miss Gwen Harper. Gwen became a member of the Ladies Club in 1977 when the ladies still had the wooden club house at the Terangion Street access entrance. With the passing of her parents many years ago, Gwen made the move into town from the farm. Through the years she travelled far and wide as a past president and represented the Nyngan Club at President’s, Friendship, Gala Days and many tournaments. A must on her calendar was President’s Day at Tottenham; there wouldn’t be a green within the Mid-West, all 12 clubs, that Gwen hadn’t put a bowl down on, including our two isolated clubs, Cobar and Bourke. Her last tournament would have been the “Twilight”, run by our men’s club, which she looked forward to each week. Gwen has been a steward with the show society for many, many years, and made it known that she would be “unavailable for bowls while the show was on” and was very involved in her community over the years. After a short illness Gwen lost her zest for life early on Thursday morning, we will miss her. A graveside service will be held for Gwen this Friday August 8 at 11am; members of the Ladies Bowling Club are invited to attend.
