Sentimental family favourite triumphs on track

23/07/2008 4:51:00 PM
Georgie Richardson returned to school at All Saints College, Bathurst yesterday afternoon after seeing one her favourite horses break through for his first win in the Maiden Plate (1000m) at Wellington.

Georgie, aged 15 and a Year 10 student, is a competent dressage rider in her own right and spent plenty of time on the mare Chockers, mother of the three-year-old chestnut gelding Chclang Chclang which won yesterday.

Chclang Chlang, by Clang from Chockers (Northern Regent CAN), is owned by Georgie’s parents Isabelle and George (‘Laddie’) Richardson and trained by Isabelle at Nyngan.

Stable jockey Robert Faehr rode Chclang Chclang ($9.00) which won by 1-1/4 lengths from Superbad ($5.00, Leanne Henry) with Flaunter ($6.00, Bradley Vale) three quarters of a length away third.

Raced on a heavy nine track, Isabelle Richardson went to Wellington not knowing what to expect with a gelding that had only had two previous starts before yesterday.

“We haven’t had any rain at Nyngan so I wasn’t sure how he would run in the heavy going,” Isabelle said.

“But Robbie knows the horse well and does all his track work, so like us was pleasantly surprised how well he handled the going.

“Because we’ve had some shoulder problems with him as a weanling, we’ve taken him along slowly so with all things considered we didn’t want to push him right out unless he was right.

“Robbie said he raced kindly throughout and he didn’t have to use the whip on him, so that added to the quality of the win.”

Chclang Chclang was bred by the Richardsons from their mare Chockers, a favourite for Georgie for a long time.

The shoulder problems restricted his pre-racing work so

he has raced greenly in his two starts.

He ran seventh in a field of eight first up at Gulgong on June 8 but finished less than three lengths third behind Willsea Thewhip at Coonamble on June 29.

“We had him entered for the Dubbo meeting that was washed out so he’s had a nice let-up since Coonamble, which seems to have been to his benefit,” Isabelle Richardson said yesterday.

“As for his future racing, we will have a close look at the program, particularly at Louth.”

The Richardson stable also saddled up the filly Bee’s Knees yesterday at Wellington in the Maiden Plate (1000m) but she was slow out of the barrier.

However, according to the trainer she came home quite

well.

The race was won by the Lee Curtis, Rosehill-trained Miss Fascinator, the $2.90 favourite ridden by Mark Lister.

After Isabelle Richardson had watched her two horses in their races at Wellington she got on the road to Bathurst with Georgie, taking her back to All Saints.

The horses were left in the care of Rodney Robb to take home to Nyngan.
