Catholic Schools’ Week was celebrated Statewide for the first time in 2008.
All 613 Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in NSW (11 dioceses) united in the celebration of Catholic Schools’ Week from March 30 to April 4.
This year’s theme was ‘Learning in Action’.
The purpose of Catholic Schools’ Week was to increase public awareness of the strengths and distinctiveness of Catholic schools and to act as a focus for community celebrations.
Mary Kenyon, executive officer, Wilcannia-Forbes Diocesan Office, said Catholic schools made an important contribution to the Australian community through the education of young Australians which is crucial for the nation’s future.
“Students are encouraged to learn and develop skills for work, explore values for living and engage in social justice activities, within the Catholic tradition.” she said.
St Joseph’s school celebrated with an Open Day on Friday April 4 with a wonderful roll-up of families and friends during the day.
Open Day commenced with a special Mass followed by morning tea, classroom visits, sausage sizzle lunch and many sport activities with parents showing some great skills.
One of the main attractions for children and adults alike, was the new ‘Active Board’ very capably displayed and operated by Stuart Rufus and the children of Year 2.
Years 5 and 6 completed a variety of science experiments, Year 4 demonstrated their skills on the computer with their PowerPoint presentations, Year 3 completed a variety of visual art tasks, Year 1 entertained the visitors with their maths games and Kindergarten’s story time led into a craft activity making pretty, clever and colourful clowns from paper bags and other bits and pieces.
Thanks so much to everyone for making the day special for the children and appreciation to the barbecue cooks and to those who supplied morning tea.
