 Race day just ‘ducky’

Race day just ‘ducky’

10/07/2008 10:10:00 AM
The Duck Creek Picnic Races have cemented their spot on the western plains social calendar with more than 2000 people enjoying country hospitality ‘Nyngan-style’ on the weekend.

It was the second Duck Creek race meeting at Nyngan, and once again proved a rip-roaring success with both locals and visitors - many from as far as Sydney and interstate.

The meeting was smoothly organised, starting with a free gourmet lunch for everyone which had even the bookmakers impressed, and finishing with popular Dubbo band Green River belting out classic rock and roll well into the night.

But the real success of the day was the drawing together of the community.

The rural, mining and commercial sectors of the community all contributed time, money, goods and expertise to bring great benefit to the Nyngan district.

Along with the show, the Nyngan Ag Expo and the Anzac Day races, the Duck Creek races are putting the district on the big-event map.

Workers on the Duck Creek gate counted in excess of 200 people more than last year through the turnstiles by mid-afternoon when the crowd peaked.

Fashions in the Field, co-ordinated by Viv Cleaver and judged by Nyngan-bred Sydney-based designer Brigid McLaughlin, was a highlight of the afternoon.

With more than $1500 worth of prizes in the offing the stakes were high and Ms McLaughlin had the tough task to sort through the dazzling array of the great, the good and the pretty wild.

Winners included locals Roshelle McKillop (stylish lady), Trish McAlpine (luscious local) and little Elly Redgen (headwear). Emily Shepherd from Sydney won the cutting-edge section, Daniel McConochie, Sydney, was the dashing dude, Gina McKay from Warren was the most fashionable filly and Joanne and Cameron Crowley from Dubbo were the best dressed couple.

Roz Maynard from Narromine was named as the yummiest mummy.

The stakes were even higher on the track, where the feature of the five- race program was the Flashman and Chalker Duck Creek Derby won this year by Griffith-trained horse Heresy, trained by Tammy Schmetzer.

Nyngan’s own Rodney Robb was the most successful trainer, with his horses consistently in the placings.

Duck Creek icon Plucka Duck arrived in true Bogan form, chauffeured by local publican Warren Blake in his classic car.

They roared and swerved up the racetrack spraying sand and petrol fumes before Plucka leapt the fence and hurled rubber duckies into the crowd.

The night ended with a light and music show by Dubbo band Green River which used a Larsons truck as a stage.
