The 4.5 x 3 metre SunSmart Marquee is a generous gift from the Cancer Council in recognition of Bogan Shire Council’s efforts to raise

community awareness about the importance of sun protection.

“We’re delighted to receive such a practical piece of equipment from the Cancer Council and are proud to be one of only 61 councils across the State to be awarded one,” general manager Michael Brady said.

“We think the SunSmart Marquee will meet a strong need in the community for shade shelters and in the long run could help to prevent skin cancer.

“Providing both sun and rain protection, the marquee will be of great benefit to the community at a wide variety of local events throughout the year,” he added.

Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world.

Almost one in two people who live their entire life in this country will get skin cancer. It kills over 1600 Australians each year.

Most skin cancers can be prevented by reducing exposure to harmful UV rays. The most effective way to be sun-smart is to make the most of the shade offered by marquees, umbrellas and trees.

“Local communities are the essence of our organisation, so it’s fantastic to have the support of Bogan Shire Council to bring our activities to life. We hope the SunSmart Marquee will be a valuable asset for community events across the region, especially as the weather starts to warm up again,” Kay Coppa, skin cancer prevention manager of the Cancer Council, said.
