New school zone road rules came into play on July 1 and Independent Dubbo MP Dawn Fardell is warning about a range of heavy fines.
Speeding in a school zone now carries a minimum fine of $135 and four demerit points, while approaching a school crossing too fast to stop safely attracts a $405 fine and four demerit points.
Double parking at a school attracts a $243 fine and two demerit points, and stopping on or near crossing carries a $324 fine and two demerit points.
The penalties are in effect between 8am and 9.30am, and 2.30pm and 4pm.
“Local drivers are usually aware of the school zones in their communities but are not
always aware of schools in areas outside their locality,” Mrs Fardell said.
“It’s important drivers remain alert and aware of areas where school children may be crossing.”
Mrs Fardell said she was pleased other measures such as flashing lights were also being introduced to combat speeding in school zones.
New flashing lights are being installed at high-volume traffic sites at Peak Hill and Dubbo.
The new system of flashing lights are being installed at Peak Hill Central School and St Joseph’s Catholic School on the Newell Highway at Peak Hill.
St John’s College and Dubbo Christian School on Sheraton Road have also been selected to receive the technology.
